The fields near Kawaguchiko in Japan fill the photographic frame with a colorful flow. The warm reds of the soil contrast with the blue pigments of Mount Fuji in the background. The snowy mountain top stands as a quiet guardian of a mysterious, magical land. From the photobook Fuji, this photograph offers a meditation on modern Japan and Japanese life, framed by the potent national symbol of the mountain.

Chris Steele-Perkins initially gained recognition by reporting on urban poverty and subcultures in Britain. He joined Magnum Photos in 1979. Following projects in Africa, Central America and Lebanon, Chris Steele-Perkins embarked on a long-term photographic exploration of Japan, publishing Fuji and Tokyo Love Hello.
