Duties & Taxes

Import Taxes

The Magnum Photos Shop is located in the United States. Orders are produced and distributed from both New York and Paris. All customers in the EU will have their orders fulfilled from Paris. As such, customers in the EU should not pay any import taxes. Depending on where an order ships from, imports need to be declared when they arrive in the destination country, and may incur import tax. Magnum Photos and the Magnum Photos Shop is not responsible for and can offer no specific advice on import fees, duty, customs or taxes that you may be charged when your merchandise reaches you. We urge you to consult your local government import office with any questions.

New York Sales Tax

Magnum Photos collects New York sales tax for purchases shipped to an address within New York State. Sales tax is not a VAT, and cannot be recovered by non-U.S. visitors when returning home.

California Sales Tax

Magnum Photos collects California sales tax for purchases shipped to an address within California. Sales tax is not a VAT, and cannot be recovered by non-U.S. visitors when returning home.

EU Sales Tax

All customers in the EU will be charged sales tax during their purchase with Magnum Photos. This will be charged as per French sales tax at 20% with the exception of customers in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands who will be charged at the local sales tax rate in accordance with legislation at a country level. These will be applied automatically and customers will not be required to do anything.

Working Out Customs Fees

Outside of the EU and USA, customer’s orders may be subject to import duty or customs fees. When a customer from the USA or the EU purchases from Magnum Photos, they are paying the landed price for that product and will not be subject to any additional charges.

When a customer from outside the USA or the EU purchases from Magnum Photos they are paying the non-landed price and may be subject to any local import or customs fees. These are outside of the control of Magnum Photos and it is highly recommended that customers contact their local government office to get advice if concerned.

Returns & Replacements

If you return a product to us, you will be the exporter from the destination country. Title and risk of loss transfer to us upon our receipt of the merchandise. Magnum Photos and the Magnum Photos Shop cannot assist you in recovering your taxes and duties. Shipping carriers will assist you for a fee. Please contact shipping carriers directly to initiate this service.

Privacy

Your privacy is important to us. We strive to exceed your expectations for privacy. Cross-border shipments are subject to inspection by customs authorities. We may also be called upon to provide certain order, shipment, and product information to our international carriers. Carriers may communicate such information to customs authorities for the purpose of facilitating customs clearance and compliance with local laws.

In 1966, George Rodger traveled to Lebenon, Syria, Israel, Jordan, Iran, Turkey and Cyprus, commissioned for a book, The Ancient Cities of the Middle East, during which time he shot this image of Palmyra, Syria, an ancient trading city. Notably, roughly one year later in 1967, the Arab coaltion decisively lost to Israel in the Six Day War, which created stirrings of a political vacuum that was partially inhabited by fundamentalist militant Islam. During the Syrian Civil War, in 2015, Palmyra came under control by ISIS, who destroyed many of the archaeological buildings and considerably damaged the surrounding area.

After capturing the blitz in London, photographer George Rodger became a war correspondent for the magazine Life. He won eighteen campaign medals covering Free French activities in West Africa, and went on to document the war front in Eritrea, Abyssinia and the Western Desert. In 1947, Rodger was invited to join Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour and William Vandivert in founding Magnum.
