From the grandly historic to the poignantly human, from battlefield violence to the gentle pleasures of peace, “In Our Time” captures the past fifty years of the world in over three hundred memorable photographs.

As the distinguished historian William Manchester explains in his provocative text that accompanies the images, the book is a distinctive blend of reporting and art that inevitably engages the heart and mind of the viewer. Each picture is a comment upon our experience of the twentieth century. On this trip, the first of several, he explored a hidden side of a country that had long fascinated him; from Tokyo to Osaka, he uncovered a Japan that is little-known to Westerners and captured it in his own inimitable photographic style.

In Bruce Gilden Cherry Blossom, Gilden tells the story of these travels and the ties he maintains with Japan in a rare introductory text. Every photograph portrays a close and powerful encounter. There are no cherry blossom trees or geishas on these pages; Gilden’s camera points toward the darker sides of Japanese life—the gangsters, the dispossessed, and people experiencing homelessness. As ever, the Magnum photographer’s work is tough and unflinching, his portrait of Japanese society unconventional and compelling.

The stories told alongside these photographs—thirty-four of which are published here for the first time—create a book that’s hard to forget.

Edition of 500.

In 2012, the Eastman Kodak Company, in Rochester, New York, declared bankruptcy. That same year, ten Magnum photographers--Chien-Chi Chang, Jim Goldberg, Bruce Gilden, Susan Meiselas, Martin Parr, Paulo Pellegrin, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Alec Soth, Larry Towell and Donovan Wylie--established a temporary base in Rochester. Over nearly three weeks, they worked with residents and Rochester's photographic community from the Visual Studies Workshop, the George Eastman House and the Rochester Institute of Technology to document the city. The photographers selected 1,000 images as the final archive; all 1,000 images are included in this volume. Three sets of the images were printed. One portfolio resides at the George Eastman House, the second is in a private collection and the third has been dispersed via the 1,000 copies of this limited edition: each copy contains a single print from the set.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0849/5575/8907/files/Asset8_bd27a341-4457-4fd5-b7e9-99a75e33c802.jpg?v=1776797067
we-dont-say-goodbye-1
We Don't Say Goodbye

We Don’t Say Goodbye is the result of 10-years of work by photographer Lorenzo Meloni in Iraq, Syria and Libya.
