Trees of Life - Fine Prints

“I want to rise, overnight into a tree. And why not — even if it won’t last, at least my dreams will keep growing.” Raghu Rai

This Earth Day, Magnum releases a special collection of contemporary posters and fine prints celebrating the enduring importance of trees. Including both contemporary and archival images, this curation pays homage to one of the most common and universal plants. Since its inception, in 1947, Magnum photographers have covered many of the significant events and people who have shaped history. Trees of Life re-examines Magnum’s archive through nature’s lens: focusing on the importance of environment in contextualizing an image. The trees in this curation are sometimes the subject, sometimes a framing tool and perhaps sometimes even an oversight. Together, these examples challenge the basic perception of this ubiquitous wood, revealing its majesty, while harkening to the diverse artistic practices that define Magnum.
