During this time, he attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in 1955 with a BA in English Literature. After military service, he moved to New York, where he worked for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEsquire\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLife\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLook\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. His book\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Portrait of a Symphony\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, on the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was published in 1961. For the next three years, he lived in Greece, producing work that resulted in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA Greek Portfolio\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, first published in 1972 and an award winner at Arles and at the Leipzig Book Fair.
