Eve Arnold became a member of Magnum Photos in 1954 on the strength of the work she shot on Harlem Fashion under the tutelage of Alexey Brodovitch, art director of Harpers Bazaar. She was one of the earliest female members of Magnum, joining at the same time as Inge Morath. While based in the US she produced social documentary on Migrant Workers, punchy political reportage of Senator McCarthy and Malcolm X, alongside of portraiture of some of Holywood's biggest names: Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford. She continued to live in and around New York until moving to the UK in the mid 60s to take up a contract with the Sunday Times.
