In 2025, Magnum Photos began the digitization of its color library archive, thanks to its partnership with Fujifilm and the Médiathèque du patrimoine et de la photographie. A World in Color marks a step to preserve Magnum’s legacy for future generations and to unearth the unseen color images that have been hidden away for decades.
Presented by Fujifilm as part of its Fujikina event in Arles, the exhibition brings to light to the unseen photographs of France, alongside an exclusive new series by Gregory Halpern, Shadow Collection, created in the house of Nicéphore Niépce. From the very place where photography was invented in 1824, Halpern reflects on the original desire to fix an image. Cameras compel us because they respond to deep human desires: to remember, to possess, to comprehend. Yet photographs reveal fragments while implying the whole; they provide the illusion of clarity in a world that resists comprehension. In this spirit, Halpern’s unseen selection is reflexive in nature, images that not only depict something, but that seem to reflect on the act of seeing itself.
