Cristina de Middel was born in Spain in 1975, and currently lives and works in Brazil. She joined Magnum Photos in 2017 and succeeded Olivia Arthur as president in 2022. Her work explores photography’s complicated relationship with truth, blending documentary and conceptual practices. After a decade as a photojournalist, she pivoted to less conventional approaches, notably in her series The Afronauts (2012), which challenges traditional representations of Africa, and Journey to the Center, which shines a light on the real motives underpinning migrant journeys from Mexico to the US. Cristina de Middel has received numerous honours, including an Infinity award from the International Center of Photography, and the Virginia Prize for women photographers. She published two books in 2023: Boa Noite Povo and The Kabuler, in collaboration with Lorenzo Meloni.
