Signature Drop #004: Mikhael Subotzky x Ernest Cole

In Kole | Subotzky, 1967–2025, Subotzky pays tribute to Magnum photographer Ernest Cole, a fellow South African photographer who deeply influenced his own work. Reconstructing two of Cole’s photographs — a 1967 self-portrait and a 1971 portrait of a woman in Harlem, one of Cole’s 60,000 rediscovered negatives — Subotzky overlays the gaze of the photographer with the gaze of his subject looking back at him. His signed print reflects both Cole’s artistic vision and Subotzky’s own admiration for his work.

In the original collage, both photographs were printed separately, then combined strip-by-strip on canvas, weaving black and white with color, subject with photographer.

For this release, a reproduction is printed onto Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper. Using his sticky-tape transfer process, which he has employed for over a decade, Subotzky creates a band of radiant lines, drawing attention to the merged gazes. The print illustrates Subotzky’s desire to “get inside and in between” images, while pushing the boundaries of objective documentary photography.

Signature Drop #002: Jim Goldberg

For this Drop, Jim Goldberg wields various media to hand-personalize two 18x24" posters. The image selections emerge from his latest series, Coming and Going, Goldberg’s autobiographical opus reexamining and reimagining a lifetime of images through techniques like montage, annotation, collage, and reconstruction. The first, “The Last Day of Summer 1997” is a matte black-and-white poster punctuated by a color Polaroid with a glossy overlay. The second poster, “My Dream” is a dense collage of cut-up contact sheets surrounding a photogram of a child.

Both were hand-finished by Goldberg. This drop was available from September 20 to September 23, 2024.

Signature Drop #001: Newsha Tavakolian

Newsha Tavakolian directly engaged her archive by hand-signing and titling 16x20” prints of “Girl Smelling a Rose.”
The five-image portrait from the late 1990s features a girl immersed in the scent of a red rose. The interplay between past and present emerges through a succession of altered images that urge viewers to look again, mirroring Tavakolian’s perspective shift from external observation toward self-reflection.
The images within this piece are part of Tavakolian’s recent series “And They Laughed at Me,” in which she critically examines photographs she took during the first three years of her career, from 1996 to 1999.
This inaugural Signature Drop ran from July 26 to July 29, 2024.
