Ian Berry

Ian Berry, born in Lancashire, England, rose to prominence in South Africa, documenting the 1960 Sharpeville massacre. His images were used in court to prove victims' innocence. Invited by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Berry joined Magnum in 1962. He became the first contract photographer for Observer Magazine in 1964, later working for National Geographic, Stern, Geo, and LIFE. His assignments spanned global events, including political and social shifts in China and the former USSR.
