Philip Jones Griffiths

Born in Rhuddlan, Wales, Philip Jones Griffiths (1936-2008) studied pharmacy in Liverpool and photographed part-time for the Manchester Guardian in London. In 1961 he became a full-time freelancer for the London-based Observer. He covered the Algerian War in 1962, then moved to Central Africa. From there he moved to Asia, photographing in Vietnam from 1966 to 1971. His book on the war, Vietnam Inc.( 1971), is one of the most detailed surveys of any conflict and an in-depth document of Vietnamese culture under attack. Further books include his retrospective Dark Odyssey (1996) and two books inspired by continued revisits of Vietnam: Agent Orange (2003) and Vietnam at Peace (2005).
