Description

Queen’s Room, Zanana. Udaipur City Palace, India, 2010.

“My work from the 1980s onward explored ideas of power underlying cultural heritage, playfully challenging assumptions embedded in fine art collections within European academies and museums through photography and video. Since 2008, my practice has shifted to the upper-caste Rajput culture of India and its relationship to the ‘other.’ The photographic series India Song examines male (mardana) and female (zanana) spaces in Mughal and Rajput palace architecture, havelis, and mausoleums through large-format digital photography.

“I celebrate the rich visual culture, foundation myths, and stories of northern India, particularly Rajasthan, using sacred and secular sites to explore caste, femininity, and relationships with the animal world. Live animals are digitally inserted into these architectural spaces, fusing analog and digital processes, bringing together wildlife and architectural photography. Animals photographed in sanctuaries, zoos, and cities inhabit palaces, temples, mausoleums, and holy sites, questioning Indian cultural heritage and rigid social hierarchies. Cranes, zebus, langurs, tigers, and elephants transform from princely pets into avatars of historic feminine figures, blurring reality and illusion and reimagining the Panchatantra for the 21st century.”

Square Print Sale: Odyssey

Magnum Photos partners with The Photographers’ Gallery for the March 2026 Square Print Sale, Odyssey. Odyssey is more than a journey — it is a search for meaning, a crossing of thresholds, a story of growth and resilience. It is the pull of the unknown: the road ahead, the distance behind, the moments that change us along the way.

Spanning continents and decades, Odyssey traces both physical and emotional paths, from epic migrations to quiet reckonings of the self. Moving through borders, memory, and time, the collection reflects the enduring power of photography to bear witness, to connect personal stories with larger histories, and to illuminate the journeys that shape who we are, and what we come to understand.

Over 100 signed or estate-stamped, museum-quality 6x6” prints will be available online for one week, priced from $110/£110/€120.

The Odyssey Square Print Sale runs Monday, March 23 at 9 a.m. ET and ends Sunday, March 29 at 11:59 p.m.
