In this year’s curation for Paris Photo, classic meets contemporary and black-and-white meets vivid color as we travel through the generations of Magnum photographers. The booth features rare and vintage signed prints from Sergio Larrain, Chris Killip, Elliott Erwitt, Philippe Halsman, Herbert List, Werner Bischof, Harry Gruyaert, Antoine d’Agata, Alex Webb Alessandra Sanguinetti, Newsha Tavakolian and more. Prints from Cristina de Middel’s Deutsche-Börse shortlisted Journey to the Center and Alec Soth’s newly published Advice for Young Artists will be on view. 

Visit Magnum at Booth C02 from Thursday through to Sunday. For those unable to attend, an online viewing of the booth is available below.

Events at the Paris Photo Fair

On Thursday, November 7 at 2 p.m., Cristina de Middel will join an Artist Talk at the Fair, alongside Thaddé Comar and Martina Bacigalupo. 

Peter van Agtmael’s Look at the USA: A Diary of War and Home has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo-Aperture Photobook Award. Winners will be announced at the fair on Friday, November 8

Polycopies

Magnum Stand (P35)
Bateau Concorde-Atlantique - Berges de Seine

In parallel with the Magnum Booth at Paris Photo, Magnum will host a stand at Polycopies, the annual photobook fair located on the Concorde-Atlantique boat on the river Seine. Alongside a community of international book publishers and sellers, Magnum’s stand will present a large selection of books, including brand new publications from Alec Soth, Gregory Halpern, Olivia Arthur, Sohrab Hura and Sakir Khader, as well as a collection of old, rare, and limited-edition releases dating back to the early years of the Magnum archive. 

The stand will be open every day from Wednesday to Sunday. Find us at the Bateau Concorde-Atlantique - Berges de Seine at Port de Solferino, Paris 75007 (metro stop Assemblée Nationale or Concorde). 

A number of book signings will also take place throughout the week, starting with Martin Parr on Thursday, November 7 at 3 p.m.

Magnum Book Fair

Talks and Signings with 10 Magnum Photographers

Magnum Gallery, Paris 75011

Celebrating the opening of Magnum’s new Photobook Store in Paris, a Book Fair featuring a series of free talks and signings will take place on Saturday, November 9. 

Four photographers will host talks around their new photobooks: Gregory Halpern with King, Queen, Knave, Olivia Arthur with Murmurings of the Skin, Sakir Khader with Dying to Exist, and Bieke Depoorter with Blinked Myself Awake. Magnum president Cristina de Middel will also be giving a talk about her publications and practice to date. 

They will be joined by Steve McCurry, Sabiha Çimen, Susan Meiselas, Emin Özmen, and Lúa Ribeira for book signings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. View the full program below.

Exhibitions

Sergio Larrain, Valparaiso — Los Abandonados

Until November 30

Magnum Gallery, Paris 75011

Curated by Agnès Sire, the exhibition presents a selection of more than 40 vintage and early gelatin silver prints by the acclaimed Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain, drawing from his work in Valparaiso and of children abandoned to the streets. 

The Gallery is open from 10 a.m. till 7 p.m. from Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. For those unable to visit during the week itself, the exhibition runs until November 30.

Magnum x Polaroid

Paris Photo Fair, Grand Palais

In an exhibition titled Real Life Is Not Black and White, Polaroid will be showcasing the work of the 10 winners of the Open Call, organized earlier this year in partnership with Magnum. 

The winners are Jakub Stanek, Aleruchi Kinika, Mengwen Cao, Maria Beatriz de Vilhena, JaĂ­r Fernando Coll, Jed Bacason, D.M. Terblanche, Stefan Pavic, Mohamed Hassan, Natela Grigalashvili.

On Saturday, November 9 at 3 p.m., Enri Canaj will host a talk with several of the winners at the booth, delving into their projects in more detail.

Saturday, November 9 

A World of Photography

Maison Européene de la Photographie

In partnership with FOTO ARSENAL WIEN, a day dedicated to the photographic archive will take place at the MEP in the Marais. Martin Parr, Susan Meiselas, Bieke Depoorter and Rafał Milach will join a panel of international academics to discuss fundamental questions about the artist’s archive, including their strategies and methods of upholding them.

Thursday, November 7

Gregory Halpern at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson

Halpern will be presenting a flick-through of his new photobook King, Queen, Knave at the Foundation on the evening of Thursday, November at 7 p.m. For those unable to attend, he will also be at the Magnum Book Fair on Saturday (see above), and at the Magnum Stand at Polycopies on Sunday.

Martin Parr at L’inapercu

Parr has curated a collection of photobooks at this photobook store and café nestled in the Marais. Titled Best of British, the selection of 50 photobooks will be unveiled by Parr himself, followed by a talk, on the evening of Thursday, November 7 from 6 p.m.

Antoine d’Agata at the Pompidou

Antoine d'Agata is currently an artist-in-residence at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Over the course of 100 days, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors are invited to witness D'Agata as he revisits and reshapes his vast archive in what he calls his œuvre-praxis. 

On Thursday, November 7 at 5 p.m., D’Agata will be joined by Spanish photographer Alberto Garcia Alix, presenting an opportunity to exchange ideas with the two on themes of history, cruelty, fragility, absence and death.
