Description
In this new body of work, his first exploration of collage, Gregory Halpern draws on the history of photography while reworking the visual language of books through fragmentation, layering, and recombination. Halpern continues his exploration of familiar themes: gesture, shadow, masculinity, and power while turning to new forms in pursuit of absurdity, abstraction and unexpected beauty.
For Halpern, a photograph is not a document as a translation, a ;distortion of the three-dimensional world into two. Here, Halpern leans into the strangeness of this translation, exploring, the nature of perception, and the relationship between representation and the thing pictured « I approached this work without knowing what I would find. What I did know was that I wanted to wake my eyes, to surrender to, and play within, the strange logic, rhythm, and intelligence of other people’s pictures. »
This installation was created as part of the Correspondences program, in which artists are invited to explore the collection ;of the Karl Lagerfeld Library and reinterpret it through their own perspective.
