Description

On November 7 of 1971, The Cockettes, a San Francisco based theatrical group, made their New York debut as part of a three-week residency at the Anderson Theatre. The hype surrounding the groups’ arrival spread rapidly with A list celebrities eager to catch the troupe’s live show that had already become legendary on the West Coast. The opening night was, famously, a disaster due to the improvised nature of the performance that seemingly did not translate to East Coast audiences, driving the likes of Andy Warhol to leave abruptly mid show.
