Part of Magnum’s Scribble Series, this black t-shirt features Alec Soth’s white silkscreen sketch of “Charles” on the back, inspired by his iconic photograph Charles, Vasa, Minnesota, 2002. On the front, Soth’s handwritten Magnum appears in white.

The original photograph, from Soth’s landmark book Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), portrays Charles standing in a snowy Minnesota landscape holding model airplanes in each hand. Reinterpreted here as a spare, hand-drawn line, the image captures the quiet surrealism and intimacy that define Soth’s work.

Produced in limited quantities, this shirt turns an emblematic portrait of contemporary photography into a piece of wearable art.

Alec Soth

Alec Soth’s work is rooted in the American photographic tradition that Walker Evans famously termed “documentary Style.” Concerned with the mythologies and oddities that proliferate America’s disconnected communities, Soth has an instinct for the relationship between narrative and metaphor. His clarity of voice has drawn many comparisons to literature, but he believes photography to be more fragmented; “It’s more like poetry than writing a novel.”
