In 1957 eight employees left Shockley Semiconductor, the lab of Nobel Prize winner William Shockley, to form their own company. Fairchild Semiconductor was Silicon Valley's first start-up. From left to right, the "Traitorous Eight": Gordon Moore, C. Sheldon Roberts, Eugene Kleiner, Robert Noyce, Victor Grinich, Julius Blank, Jean Hoerni and Jay Last.
