Ernest Cole

Ernest Cole’s early work chronicled the horrors of apartheid for Drum magazine and the New York Times among numerous other publications, culminating in the groundbreaking publication, House of Bondage. After his exile, he relocated to New York, where a Ford Foundation grant enabled him to document Black communities across urban and rural America. Long believed lost, the negatives of Cole’s American photographs resurfaced in Sweden in 2017.
