Henri Cartier-Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) was born in Chanteloup, Seine-et-Marne. Previously interested in painting, he found his life-long passion for photography in 1932. Taken prisoner of war in 1940, he escaped in 1943 and subsequently joined an underground organization to assist prisoners and escapees. In 1947, with Robert Capa, George Rodger, David 'Chim' Seymour, and William Vandivert, he founded Magnum Photos. His first book, Images à la Sauvette (1952), published in English as The Decisive Moment, has influenced generations of photographers. It defined the moment in which all elements in the photographic frame come together to create a visual peak.
